The solution to the questionnaire that follows should be submitted by Fri 22nd, November, by email, with this heading : PH II – 2013 – PW #2. Please mail to laurazetaeme1@gmail.com

Practical Work  #2 – Discourse Theory

In this situation, Claire and Kirk are on their way to visit Allan, their friend. While Kirk is at the wheel, Claire is phoning Allan:

C :        Help! We´re lost!
A:        Where are you?
C:         I don´t know. There´s a supermarket and a river.
A:        Oh, I think I know where you are… Can you see a bridge?
C:         Yes.
A:        Ok, well go across the bridge and turn right.
C:         Turn right? How odd!
A:        Yeah, may sound… Now, can you see some trees on the left?
C:         I think so. What, in front of a bar?
A:        No! In front of the grocer´s.
C:         I see… Yes!
A:        That´s it. You´ll see my house on the left. Well done, you´re here!

J:          It means he´s not just keen. He´s in love with her.
L:         I know. I know. Poor guy…
J:          Poor guy? What d´you mean? He doesn´t sound very poor to me if he can

Transcription I, revisited

Dear all, find below the text for the assignement. I decided to offer yet another way to access the text.
Here we go...

The Illustrated Mum

Marigold wanted us to go to meet Star but I talked her out of it. I knew Star would die if all her new High School friends saw Marigold, especially in her wound-up state.
   “No, don´ t let´ s hang around Star´ s school. She´ s maybe got netball practice today, anyway. Let´ s just go home.”
“I don´ t want to go home. Boring! Let´ s have some fun,” said Marigold. “Let´ s go shopping, eh?  Star´ s been niggle-naggling me about your clothes, telling me you need T-shirts and jeans and trainers.” She whipped a shiny plastic card.
I knew Marigold had no money in the bank to pay a credit card bill.

Dictation assignemet for Thu 13th

Hi everybody,

Here is the link to do the assignemet for this comming class (the link belongs to the tab Dictation and Transcription Practice -Ph II, in the general Lab´s blog)

 https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=d0c8389744c08cd4&id=D0C8389744C08CD4%21181#cid=D0C8389744C08CD4&id=D0C8389744C08CD4%21331

In this set work on the texts Hw 1 and Hw 2. They have their respective keys, so, you do your own corrections and then hand everything in. In the audio files you can choose to work first on the unexploded version, and then on the exploded one, similar to the dictations in class. Include the tones you perceive, and once the text + the tones satisfy you, go to the key and be your own teacher.

See you all on Thursday!

John Maidment´s Blog - Intonation

Have you realised there´s a new link? It´s online intonation practice, just for you. You´ll find a group of 8 sets. Try the first one, and once satisfied, progress to the next one. VG!

Assignement: intonational transcription

This assignement is the outcome of the work you did in class last week: on the page you hand in, include the team members name & surname, transcribe the dialogues (the one and only the one you worked with in class), and a simple justification for your tone choice.

Mini Dialogues - Wells Ch 2

Hi students,

These are all the dialogues we collaboratively worked on last class - you will recognise yours! It´s important to have them all to contribute with your comments when we discuss them together in our next meeting

Bert                 Pinky?
Bob                 Don´t you like it?
Bert                 It stinks! Let´s call him Napoleon.

Patsy              Mummy, is it going to hurt?
Mummy          No, Darling. Just open wide.

Planned activity

See in Wells´book, page 91 the chart on the uses of tones - we´ll base our activities on this next class. Work out your own system of tone recognition and we´ll discuss this all together.

Welcome!

Let´s make this area our channel of communication and creativity. Enjoy!
